- BLOG TOPIC
I’ll be focusing on career preparation advice for college students studying communication or a related field.
- TOPIC NICHE
Instead of broadly speaking to all college students, I’ll be focusing on career preparation and guidance for students looking to enter a communication field. While some advice, such as resume writing, may be generally the same for most college students, communication students can still benefit from personalized guidance.
Based on some market competition research I’ve done, it quickly became clear that most search results for communication student career preparation led to college sites describing their communication programs. There are also quite a few career professional perspectives, although I only managed to find a handful that had some posts specifically related to guidance for communication students. I was not able to find any blogs written from a communication student perspective, aimed at providing guidance for other college students within the same field – thus, this niche for my blog was born.
As a side note, I obviously am speaking from a female perspective. Ana Borruto and other writers have discussed research that indicates how communication fields tend to be more saturated by women than men. While my written content can be utilized by both genders, I will likely cater to females simply because that’s the way the communication cookie seems to crumble!
- HOW DOES THIS FIT IN WITH MY PERSONAL BRAND?
In an earlier post discussing my personal brand, I talked a lot about how important it is for me to stand out as an original in a room full of other content creators.I also mentioned that as a college student, I was pretty confident that my niche would change over time, but that I currently would market myself within the communication realm as being capable of all kinds of content creation, especially written formats focused on customer attraction.
My blog topic choice reflects my personal brand well because my niche will allow me to stand out among other content creators, especially since I was barely able to find a similar niche during my research. My blog will of course be made up of written content but instead of customer attraction per se, I will be focused on audience attraction. Instead of selling a product for a business, I will be focusing on persuading readers to buy, so to speak, what I’m saying in regards to how communication students can better prepare for their lives after college.
- REASONING FOR USING A NEW BLOG + NAME IDEAS
I opted to create a brand new blog site primarily so I could get some experience using www.wordpress.org moving forward, along with some crash course lessons in coding. Although consistency is key when establishing a brand, since I just started blogging, importing my content was pretty easy and I know I have plenty of time to hit the ground running in order to build an audience. At this time, I’m stilling playing around with potential names for my blog. Let me know in the comments if any naming inspiration strikes that you’d like to send my way!
- WHAT SOCIAL PLATFORMS WILL I BE USING?
As mentioned earlier, my written content will be beneficial for both genders, but my choice of social platforms is largely based on female usage since they make up the majority of my target audience. For more details on how women seem to run the communication world, I’d recommend reading Why Are There So Many Women in Public Relations, Studies Examine Gender Enrollment in Communications, and this report on enrollment records by the National Communication Association.
As reported by data shared on AdWeek, Twitter and Instagram are among the more popular social media platforms with women. These platforms are also the most popular, outside of Facebook and Pinterest, among millennials which many of my target audience falls within. Brandwatch even stated that 90 percent of Instagram users are younger than 35 and that engagement with brands on Instagram is 10 times higher than Facebook, 54 times higher than Pinterest, and 84 times higher than Twitter.
Furthermore, since I’ve already established an Instagram following, many of which are actually within my target audience, I believe using this platform is a wise choice. By engaging my current users I will be able to focus more seeing what attracts my followers without also struggling to build an audience from the ground up.You can follow me on Twitter here and on Instagram here.
